HD Hyundai and Siemens launch joint marine research hub to digitize shipbuilding
HD Hyundai and Siemens opened a joint research center in Busan to speed up digital shipbuilding, using AI and virtual-yard tools.
HD Hyundai and Siemens inaugurated the Global Marine Center in Busan’s Haeundae-gu district, assembling roughly 50 specialists in ship design, electrical systems, piping, AI and product lifecycle management. The center aims to build a marine platform that unifies data across the entire ship lifecycle into interactive 3D models, allowing virtual shipyard simulations before physical implementation. Development will be coordinated by HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center in Pangyo, with pilot testing at the Ulsan and Yeongam shipyards.
CEOs Kim Hyung-kwan and Siemens CRO Robert Jones said the partnership will reduce construction time and operational risk while enhancing competitiveness. The effort builds on a July agreement to create a digital platform covering design, production, supply chain, quality control and maintenance, supporting HD Hyundai’s target of 30% faster builds and 30% higher productivity by 2030.
Why it matters
The partnership could reshape shipbuilding by cutting costs and build times through digital innovation.
