HDFC Bank nominates two candidates for Jagdishan’s successor, pending RBI approval

HDFC Bank has submitted two names to the RBI for approval as the next MD & CEO, after Sashidhar Jagdishan announced his retirement on Oct 26, and proposed a new whole-time director role.

HDFC Bank announced that it has sent two potential successors for the MD & CEO post to the Reserve Bank of India, with the appointments intended for a three-year term pending regulatory approval. Current MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan will retire on Oct 26 after deciding not to pursue another term, a decision linked to earlier uncertainty about his tenure. The succession plan comes after a turbulent year marked by governance concerns following the 2023 merger with Housing Development Finance Corp and the abrupt resignation of part-time chairman Atanu Chakraborty, although later reviews found no wrongdoing.

Additionally, the bank proposed a new whole-time director seat to enhance synergy and oversight of its subsidiaries and to expand its leadership pipeline. The board approved these proposals on Sep 12, 2026, and confirmed that the candidates have no conflicts of interest or SEBI bans. Final appointments will depend on RBI and other required approvals.

Why it matters

Leadership change at one of India's largest private banks could influence market confidence and corporate governance.
