Health Insurers Fund Centrist Think Tank Targeting Medicare-For-All Candidates
Investigative reporting shows the health-insurance sector donated to Third Way, a centrist think tank gearing up to spend $15 million opposing Medicare-for-All-supporting candidates.
A review of corporate tax returns uncovered that the private-insurance coalition Better Solutions for Healthcare contributed $50,000 to Third Way’s lobbying branch in 2024, with members such as the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and the AHIP trade group. The investigation also identified donations from CVS Health, Johnson & Johnson and the Business Roundtable, which increased its 2024 gift to $50,000 after giving $25,000 the previous year.
Third Way, long critical of the Democratic progressive wing and Medicare-for-All, is preparing a $15 million effort to block candidates like progressive epidemiologist Abdul El-Sayed, who recently won a Senate primary in Michigan. President Jonathan Cowan described the situation as a “next war” against radical, far-left contenders in swing-state districts. The funding trail links the think tank to Republican-aligned firms such as Targeted Victory, founded by GOP operative Alexander Schriver. Critics note that Third Way’s media appearances have omitted any discussion of these corporate backers.
