Health Minister Hegedűs cites vulgar 2022 letter from former official amid medical chamber law debate
Health Minister Zsolt Hegedűs posted a vulgar 2022 letter allegedly written by former state secretary Péter Takács and linked it to the 2023 overhaul of the Magyar Orvosi Kamara’s legal status.
Zsolt Hegedűs, Hungary’s health minister, shared on social media a profane letter he attributes to former health state secretary Péter Takács, claiming it referenced a response to the Magyar Orvosi Kamara’s December 1, 2022 extraordinary circular. The letter allegedly names Samu Attila, then press chief of the Interior Ministry, and Bence Rétvári, then parliamentary state secretary at the same ministry. According to Hegedűs, the exchange contributed to the Orbán government’s submission of a bill on February 27-28 that fundamentally altered the legal standing of the medical chamber, ending mandatory membership and transferring substantive ethics procedures to the Egészségügyi Tudományos Tanács.
The legislation was announced on March 1 and entered force the following day. Hegedűs now says a final parliamentary vote is slated for Tuesday to restore compulsory membership and the chamber’s pre-2023 functions.
