Health Minister Hegedűs unveils patient survey, whistleblower safeguards and system overview
Health Minister Hegedűs Zsolt announced a nationwide patient-satisfaction survey, a new whistle-blowing protection scheme for health workers and a comprehensive map of the country's health system.
Health Minister Hegedűs Zsolt used a late-night Facebook post to outline three major initiatives for the Hungarian health sector. From Monday, a country-wide, standardized patient-satisfaction survey will be conducted regularly to collect both positive and negative feedback. The government will also set up a whistle-blowing framework that allows doctors, nurses and other staff to report unsafe conditions or professional misconduct confidentially, with statutory protection against retaliation.
A separate effort will produce a national health-system atlas that details one outlet state of facilities, regional disparities and the most pressing shortcomings. Hegedűs emphasized that greater honesty and openness should initially reveal more problems, but ultimately lead to fewer errors and higher quality care. He also launched a new series of Facebook posts titled “Midnight Ministerial Thoughts” to keep the public informed about ongoing reforms.
Why it matters
Improving patient feedback and protecting staff whistle-blowers can boost safety and quality in Hungary's health care system.
