Health Minister Hegedűs Zsolt announced the conclusion of a ministerial consultation on the fetal-heartbeat rule after meetings with church leaders and civil-society groups.
The Health Ministry, led by Hegedűs Zsolt, finished a set of consultations on the controversial fetal-heartbeat regulation on Friday, bringing together church officials and leaders of civil organisations. The minister had invited these groups after 18 NGOs sent an open letter demanding that women’s advocacy groups be part of the dialogue; signatories included Emma Egyesület, Másállapotot a szülészetben, TASZ and Amnesty International.
Based on three highlighted topics, existing scientific evidence and ethical recommendations, the ministry plans to issue its official position in the coming weeks. In parallel, the selection process for the head of the National Ambulance Service continues, with hearings and evaluations slated for a Monday announcement. The issue resurfaced in July when Mi Hazánk MPs placed plastic fetuses on parliamentary tables, prompting the minister to criticize the rule as misleading and socially exclusive. Earlier reporting by one outlet indicated that the regulation had not materially changed abortion rates.
