Health Minister proposes firing rule for doctors who leave public hospitals for private practice during shifts

Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete announced a draft rule that would allow hospital managers to terminate doctors after three instances of leaving public duties to work privately during scheduled hours.

In a televised appearance, Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete warned that doctors who abandon their public-hospital duties to see patients in private practices during working hours could face dismissal after three offenses, provided managers are given the authority to end their contracts. He explained that a forthcoming legal framework will give hospital administrators this sanctioning power. Rogobete also announced that official talks with health-sector unions will restart next week to develop a new remuneration law intended to stop significant income reductions for doctors.

He emphasized that ensuring staff adhere to public-hospital schedules remains a core focus of his ministry. The minister argued that clear legislation, rather than random inspections, is the sustainable solution to the problem.

Why it matters

The proposal could reshape doctors' employment conditions and affect public-hospital staffing across the country.
