Health Minister says major budget boost needed to keep Romania's hospitals open
Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete announced that a sizable budget adjustment is required to maintain the Romanian health system through year-end and pledged that no hospitals will be closed.
In a televised interview, Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete said the ministry will finalize a major budget revision by the end of next week to secure enough resources for the health sector through the end of the year. He explained that half of the allocated funds will support national health programmes, drug purchases, pharmacy reimbursements and related services, with the balance earmarked for paying medical leave benefits.
Rogobete condemned recent reallocations that diverted funds to projects like stadiums in Oradea and Brașov, calling them short-sighted. He also outlined plans to broaden the network of specialised ambulatory clinics, noting that most patients currently visit hospitals for routine checks that could be handled outpatient. The minister stressed that no hospitals will be shut down and that the system is moving toward day-care and outpatient treatment models.
Why it matters
Ensuring sufficient funding for Romania's health system is crucial to avoid service cuts and keep hospitals operating.
