Heart Aerospace's X1 electric demonstrator completes 27-minute maiden flight

Heart Aerospace flew its full-scale X1 battery-electric demonstrator for 27 minutes, reaching 1,100 ft and using about $5 of electricity.

On August 12, Heart Aerospace successfully completed the first flight of its X1 demonstrator, a 106-foot-wide, 76-foot-long aircraft that weighs more than 25,000 pounds at takeoff. The 27-minute mission, performed at Plattsburgh International Airport, saw the plane climb to 1,100 feet, execute various maneuvers, and land safely under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category. Powered by an all-electric system delivering over 1 megawatt, the X1 consumed roughly $5 worth of electricity, a stark contrast to the week-average jet-fuel price of $3.50 per gallon.

The flight validates technology for Heart’s planned ES-30 hybrid-electric regional jet, slated for flight testing in 2028 and commercial service by 2031. Major carriers United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX have already pledged support, with total commitments valued at about $9.4 billion. Company executives, including founder Anders Forslund and CTO Ben Stabler, said the test proves the feasibility of electric propulsion to cut operating costs by more than 40 percent.
