The United States experienced its hottest month on record in July 2026, echoing the 1936 Dust Bowl heat but now threatening electricity generation. High temperatures raise demand for air conditioning while simultaneously reducing water availability needed for cooling nuclear plants, delivering fuel to coal and diesel generators, and powering hydroelectric facilities. France’s EDF halted two reactors and limited six more, removing 6.4 gigawatts from the grid, while Germany’s Rhine fell to its lowest level since 1880, hampering barge traffic.
In the U.S., the Mississippi River’s low water has repeatedly disrupted coal shipments, and Lake Mead’s record low elevation threatens to shut down most of Hoover Dam’s turbines, cutting roughly 70% of its capacity. Climate scientists link these stresses to a strengthening El Niño and rising ocean temperatures, suggesting future summers could be even hotter. To adapt, the Bureau of Reclamation allocated $52 million for new wide-head turbines at Hoover Dam that can operate at lower lake levels, though they won’t be operational until at least the end of 2028.
