The rail system, largely designed for a cooler, wetter climate, includes many structures dating back to the 1800s, making some sections more vulnerable. Network Rail has described the season as presenting “exceptional challenges” and has applied speed restrictions in affected areas while cooperating with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch. Potential long-term solutions discussed include increasing the stress-free temperature limit, applying reflective white paint to rails, and installing concrete slab track, though each faces financial or technical constraints.
