Heavy overnight rain swamps Hanoi streets, flooding major roads and causing traffic chaos

Intense rain from the night of Sept. 16 to early Sept. 17 dumped up to 199 mm in Hanoi, flooding streets and halting traffic on key routes.

Rainfall monitoring recorded extreme totals across several Hanoi districts, including 199 mm in Tu Liem and over 150 mm in others. Floodwater covered more than 30 cm of National Highway 6, forcing vehicles into a single lane, while Thang Long Boulevard saw over 50 cm of water, stopping low-clearance traffic. The deluge disrupted morning commutes and forced motorbikes onto the expressway.

Why it matters

The flooding disrupts daily commuting and underscores Hanoi's exposure to sudden heavy rainstorms.
