Heavy rain expected to hit Istanbul and western Turkey, raising flood risk on Tuesday

Meteorologists warn that strong rainstorms will sweep across western Turkey on Tuesday, with Istanbul among the hardest hit and flooding possible.

A weather system is set to bring widespread heavy rain to western Turkey this week, according to Abdullah Macit of the General Directorate of Meteorology under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. After a rainy Monday across the Marmara, Aegean and western Mediterranean zones, Tuesday will see the strongest precipitation in Istanbul, the Marmara provinces of Çanakkale, Tekirdağ, Bursa, as well as the Aegean provinces of Izmir, Muğla and Aydın, and parts of Antalya, Adana, Osmaniye and Hatay.

Macit cautioned that the intensity of the rain could trigger flooding and urged people to heed official warnings. Temperatures are expected to dip below seasonal averages, especially in Istanbul where they may fall to 15 °C before rising again later in the week. Strong southerly and northerly winds are also forecast for several regions, adding to the unsettled conditions.

Why it matters

The forecasted downpours could cause flooding and disrupt daily life for millions in Turkey's most populous regions.
