Heavy rains and cold winds sweep Greece as forecast predicts continued storms
A major autumn rainstorm hit Greece, causing floods, road closures and injuries, with more unsettled weather expected in the coming days.
Greece experienced its initial major autumn rain event today, leading to localized flooding, stranded vehicles and multiple injuries, with the highest rainfall recorded in sections of Evia and the Peloponnese. Meteorologist Sakis Arnaoutoglou said the weather will remain unstable on Wednesday, featuring strong north-westerly gusts of force 6-7 Beaufort over the Ionian and Aegean seas and a further fall in temperatures that could approach 0 °C in central and northern regions.
He noted that summer’s low-temperature records of 22 °C have now become the seasonal highs. Thursday is expected to be clear, but from Friday morning the pattern will shift, bringing stronger rain and thunderstorms mainly to western Greece, with showers also forecast for the Peloponnese, eastern mainland, and possibly Attica. Additional rain is predicted for Sunday across Evia, the Sporades, eastern Boeotia and parts of northern Attica. Overall, the forecast calls for a cooler, windier September with intermittent rain before a drier October.
