Heavy rains cause deadly floods in Senegal ahead of Youth Olympics

Intense rains triggered flash floods across Dakar and other towns in Senegal, killing several people and prompting officials to warn of more rain.

Over the weekend, intense rainfall triggered flash floods that swamped streets and damaged structures in Senegal’s capital Dakar and several other towns. The Interior Ministry confirmed deaths and injuries in Dakar and the northeastern town of Matam, and reported a building collapse in Kaolack. One outlet's reports said a mother and her child drowned in the Parcelles Assainies district after their home was flooded.

Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo warned that more rain is expected on Monday through Wednesday and noted that the upcoming school year could be postponed if floodwaters persist. The national meteorological agency ANACIM measured 142 mm of rain in 24 hours in Rufisque and Ranerou, with Yoff district recording 138 mm. The floods come weeks before Senegal hosts the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics starting Oct 31, testing the country’s infrastructure.

Why it matters

The floods expose Senegal’s susceptibility to extreme weather and risk disrupting Youth Olympic preparations.
