Heavy rains cause floods, landslides and evacuations in Uttar Pradesh, Nepal and eastern India
Over the past three days exceptionally heavy monsoon rains have produced deadly floods and landslides in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh and in neighboring Nepal. Uttar Pradesh’s relief commissioner’s office confirmed at least 56 deaths and damage to more than 1,000 houses. Nepal’s disaster authority reported 12 deaths and said seven people remain missing.
In eastern India, monsoon activity has led to waterlogging and evacuations, with over 40,000 people moved from ten districts in Odisha and one drowning death recorded in Chhattisgarh. Officials say the events underscore the vulnerability of densely populated regions to extreme precipitation.
