Heavy rains trigger travel bans, floods and landslides across multiple Nepal districts

Across Nepal, persistent heavy rain has disrupted transport and heightened flood and landslide hazards, leading officials to impose night-time travel bans in several districts and relocate vulnerable households. The Mechi Highway in Taplejung was cleared of a landslide blockage, yet vehicles are prohibited from operating after dark as a precaution. In Gulmi, river levels rose roughly two metres, schools were shut and night travel limited to essential services, while the Koshi Barrage saw its flow increase to over 240,000 cusecs, triggering the opening of 31 gates and a red alert.

Structural damage includes the collapse of mud-brick houses in Panauti and the evacuation of 14 families from flood-prone areas in Kanchanpur. Snowfall in northern districts added cold conditions, affecting livestock and residents in temporary shelters, and trekking in high-altitude zones such as Manang and the Manaslu Base Camp area was suspended for several days.
