Heavy Snow Blankets Romania's Mountain Roads, Prompting Snowplow Operations and Travel Warnings
Abundant snowfall covered the Transfăgărășan and Pasul Prislop in Romania, leading road crews to clear the routes and officials to advise drivers to stay off unprepared mountain roads.
A strong winter system brought abundant snow to Romania’s high mountain areas, coating the Transfăgărășan and the Prislop Pass with a thick layer of white. On Friday morning, road crews from the Direcția Regională de Drumuri și Poduri Brașov began clearing the routes with snowplows and spreading anti-slip agents, while the Cabana Capra area turned into a picturesque winter scene. Temperatures dropped to -7 °C at Vârful Omu, and the National Meteorological Administration warned that similar conditions will persist, expecting 5-15 cm of snow at elevations above 1500 m across the Southern and Eastern Carpathians.
The snowfall also impacted DN 18 in the Prislop Pass, a key link between Maramureș and Suceava, and was reported in Harghita. Authorities cautioned motorists to stay off the alpine roads unless their cars are equipped for winter driving.
Why it matters
The snow threatens travel safety on major mountain routes and may disrupt transport between key Romanian regions.
