Heineken to acquire 300 UK pubs from debt-laden Stonegate for €350 million

Heineken plans to buy 300 pubs from Stonegate in a €350 million transaction as the British landlord seeks to cut its £3 billion debt.

Heineken is set to purchase 300 public houses from Stonegate for €350 million, expanding its British presence. The deal helps Stonegate address a £3 billion debt burden, part of which stems from its 2019 acquisition of Enterprise Inns just before the COVID-19 shutdown of the UK pub market. The landlord plans to divest around 1,000 of its 4,500 venues to improve its balance sheet.

Industry pressures such as higher beer costs, energy prices, wages and employer taxes have compounded the challenges. Heineken, through its subsidiary Star Pubs & Bars, already runs about 2,350 pubs across the United Kingdom. The transaction reflects ongoing consolidation in a sector still recovering from the pandemic.

Why it matters

The deal reshapes the UK pub market and shows how large brewers are leveraging acquisitions to strengthen their foothold.
