Hennepin County, Minnesota Leads Nation in Federal Funding Allocation

SmartAsset’s recent report identified Hennepin County, home to Minneapolis, as the top recipient of federal dollars in the United States for the 18-month period examined. The county attracted more than $286 billion, roughly 4.7% of the $6 trillion total captured in the analysis of 3,132 counties. This translates to $222,702 per resident, placing Hennepin 11th in the nation for per-capita federal spending, while Brewster County, Texas, led that metric.

The bulk of Hennepin’s funding came from defense contracts for the M1156 Precision Guidance Kit and health-related assistance, chiefly Medicare, administered by the Department of Health and Human Services. The study’s author, Toby Nelson, noted that the concentration reflects large facilities and corporate headquarters, such as UnitedHealth in Eden Prairie, rather than direct payments to local residents. He also clarified that immigration operations and payroll were not major factors in the county’s ranking.
