Hero Future Energies to invest ₹4,000 crore in green hydrogen projects
Hero Future Energies plans to spend ₹4,000 crore on green hydrogen initiatives, targeting steel, cement and refining sectors.
Hero Future Energies, supported by KKR, announced a ₹4,000 crore investment plan for green hydrogen, focusing on hard-to-abate industries such as steel, cement and refining. The firm is currently assessing a 50 MW electrolyser and a 250 MW hybrid renewable capacity, with project details to be disclosed as they mature. Chairman Rahul Munjal highlighted the company's existing experience, including a plant at Rockman Industries in Tirupati, and a partnership with an Indian Institute of Technology on upcoming projects.
He projected that green hydrogen will become a staple energy source within the next three to four years, allowing HFE to scale up to large-volume projects. HFE’s broader portfolio already spans 7.7 GWp of renewable assets and 2.9 GWh of battery storage across India, Ukraine, Vietnam and the UK, with a focus on dispatchable power for government-backed off-takers. The company also mentioned potential interest in pumped storage, pending favorable economics.
Why it matters
The investment could accelerate India's shift to low-carbon fuels for heavy industry and boost the green hydrogen market.
