High blood tyrosine linked to shorter lifespan in men, study finds
Researchers analyzing UK Biobank data discovered that men with elevated tyrosine levels in their blood tend to live about a year less, while women show no such association.
Scientists from the University of Hong Kong and the University of Georgia used UK Biobank records to explore how two amino acids, phenylalanine and tyrosine, relate to aging. Blood measurements showed that men with greater tyrosine concentrations had an average lifespan shortened by nearly one year, whereas women displayed no significant link. Phenylalanine showed no impact on longevity for either sex after adjusting for tyrosine.
The researchers propose that excess tyrosine might interfere with insulin signaling or alter mood-related neurotransmitters, potentially explaining the gender difference. They caution that the findings do not prove that tyrosine supplements cause reduced lifespan, and they recommend dietary adjustments only for individuals with unusually high blood levels. Foods rich in tyrosine include meat, fish, dairy, eggs, and certain nuts and seeds.
