High Court to hear Najib's stay request and Na'imah's anti-corruption questions this week

Malaysia's High Court will consider former prime minister Najib Razak's application to suspend his 15-year sentence and fine, while the Federal Court will address legal questions raised by Na'imah Abdul Khalid.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court has scheduled a Wednesday hearing on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's application to pause the execution of his 15-year prison term and the RM11.4 billion penalty linked to the 1MDB fund misappropriation case. Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin set the date after Najib's lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, submitted a certificate of urgency, and Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam attended the case management.

On Thursday, the Federal Court will consider three legal questions submitted by Na'imah Abdul Khalid, the widow of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, regarding sections of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. The High Court will also entertain an interim injunction request against blogger Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris (Papagomo) in a separate MCMC defamation suit. Additional unrelated criminal matters, including a murder trial in Penang and a kidnapping case involving a Palestinian man, are also slated for hearings this week.

Why it matters

The hearings could affect the enforcement of a high-profile corruption sentence and clarify asset-declaration rules for Malaysia's elite.
