High pressure brings drier weather and sunshine to the UK this weekend

The UK is set to experience a shift in weather as high pressure builds, easing the recent heavy rain that produced flash floods in some areas. While the weekend will feature sunny intervals and daytime temperatures climbing above the August average in parts of southern England, nights will become noticeably colder, with lows dropping to around 3-4°C in rural Scotland and northern England. Most of Scotland and Northern Ireland are forecast to stay dry, though occasional light showers may appear in the north and west.
Despite the brief improvement, the drought situation remains severe, with over two-thirds of England and all of Wales still classified as drought-affected, prompting the National Drought Group to meet weekly. The next few weeks are expected to bring mixed conditions, including more rain and the possibility of hot spells in September.
