High school coaches adjust practice times to protect athletes during heat wave
Several Ohio schools postponed football practices this week because of extreme temperatures, with staff emphasizing hydration and safety.
Extreme heat forced multiple Ohio high school football programs to reschedule practices this week. Maurice Harden, who leads Xenia High School’s football team, noted that the Buccaneers’ practice was moved later to keep players safe while still maintaining necessary preparation. The Trotwood-Madison Rams did not begin their workout until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, a significant delay from their normal schedule.
One outlet trainer Tiana Dixon-Gordon said the team adheres to OSHA-derived parameters, allowing players to wear pads and helmets only when conditions permit. She highlighted that hydration is the primary defense, with additional ice and water stations set up around the stadium, supported by trainers from Kettering Health. With the heat wave expected to continue through Friday, coaches are keeping safety at the forefront of their planning.
