High school soccer brawl sparks police probe after viral video shows brutal attack

Police are investigating a violent on-field assault that occurred during a South Dakota boys’ high school soccer match, captured in a video that has amassed millions of views.

A violent confrontation unfolded in the second half of a South Dakota high school soccer match when Rapid City Central’s Jaxson Bergman tackled Brookings’ Kyle Soost, then delivered a kick to the back of Soost’s head and five punches while he lay on the field. The clip, which quickly surpassed 20 million views, led Brookings police chief Michael Drake to launch an investigation, planning to interview more than 100 witnesses and examine several video recordings.

The referee issued Bergman a red card, invoking the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s policy that mandates a one-game suspension and a sportsmanship course. SDHSAA executive director Dan Swartos called the episode “unacceptable” and noted that further disciplinary action rests largely with the schools. Rapid City Central’s district and Brookings superintendent Summer Schultz said they will follow their respective conduct codes, which can include suspension or expulsion for assaultive behavior. Both districts emphasized the need for respect and sportsmanship and acknowledged the national attention the incident has drawn.
