Hilaria Baldwin offers five desk-friendly stretches to ease stiffness

Fitness instructor Hilaria Baldwin recommends five simple movements that can be performed at a workstation to counteract the effects of prolonged sitting.

According to certified fitness and yoga teacher Hilaria Baldwin, the habit of sitting for most of the day contributes to posture problems such as "tech neck" and carpal tunnel. To mitigate these issues, she shares five easy stretches that can be done without leaving a desk. The first two moves focus on aligning the shoulders and elbows while pulling the shoulder blades together.

The third exercise involves interlacing the fingers behind the head to flex and extend the spine with controlled breathing. The fourth targets core engagement by drawing the belly button toward the spine while seated. The final stretch is a standing lunge that also stretches the calves and hip flexors. Baldwin advises workers to perform the sets intermittently and to adjust the motions to fit their specific workspace.

Why it matters

Office workers can reduce pain and improve posture by incorporating quick, chair-based stretches into their daily routine.
