Historic Oheka Castle Estate to Be Auctioned This October
The 127-room Oheka Castle on Long Island, once owned by financier Otto Hermann Kahn, is scheduled for auction on October 27.
Oheka Castle, a sprawling 127-room estate on Long Island constructed in 1919 for financier Otto Hermann Kahn, is set to be auctioned on October 27 through Concierge and Adam Modlin of The Modlin Group. The mansion, whose name derives from Kahn’s nickname, hosted extravagant gatherings that are said to have inspired the parties in "The Great Gatsby." Following Kahn’s death in 1934, the property passed through multiple owners, fell into disrepair in the 1980s, and suffered fires and vandalism.
Land developer Gary Melius later invested $40 million to restore the 109,000-square-foot home but defaulted on a loan and declared bankruptcy in July 2025, prompting the upcoming sale. Currently the second-largest private residence in the United States, Oheka Castle serves as a venue for weddings, a restaurant, and a boutique hotel, and has been featured in movies, TV shows, and music videos such as Taylor Swift’s "Blank Space." Tours of the grounds are available for $30.
