Historic Reformed church and wooden bell tower razed by fire in Radostyán

A blaze on Saturday afternoon completely destroyed the protected Reformed church and its adjacent 16-metre wooden bell tower in Radostyán, leaving only the walls standing.

A Saturday afternoon blaze gutted the protected Reformed church and its separate wooden bell tower in the village of Radostyán, leaving only the masonry walls intact. The fire was brought under control by local firefighters, according to the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén megyei Katasztrófavédelmi Igazgatóság. The church, whose origins trace back to the medieval era and was largely reconstructed in 1784, has been a key element of the settlement’s cultural heritage.

Adjacent to the church stands a 16-metre high, six-sided baroque wooden bell tower built in 1762, a rare surviving example of Hungarian timber architecture. Both structures have been protected as historic monuments since 1953, making the loss a significant blow to the region’s architectural legacy.

Why it matters

The fire erased a centuries-old protected monument and a rare wooden bell tower, a loss for cultural heritage.
