HM Passport Office reminds parents of new child passport rules and fees
The HM Passport Office has issued a reminder that children of any age must have their own passport for overseas travel and that applications must be made by someone with parental responsibility.
The HM Passport Office has posted an alert for anyone planning to obtain a new or replacement passport for a child, reiterating that all minors must hold their own passport for international journeys, a rule in force since October 5, 1998. Applications must be completed by an individual with parental responsibility, which is automatically assigned to the birth mother and may extend to fathers, partners or civil partners based on marital status, civil partnership, or consent to fertility treatment.
The notice also explains how parental responsibility can be established for same-sex couples or when the birth is not jointly registered. Pricing details were provided: a standard 34-page child passport costs £66.50 when applied for online and £80 on paper, while a 54-page frequent-traveller passport is £80.50 online or £94 by paper form.
Why it matters
Parents need to know the legal requirements and costs before applying for a child's passport to avoid travel delays.
