Ho Chi Minh City aims for 80% good air days by 2030

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee approved a plan to achieve good or moderate air quality on 80% of days by 2030, with a longer-term goal of daily good air by 2045.

Approved by the municipal People’s Committee, Ho Chi Minh City’s air-quality plan targets good or moderate conditions on 80% of days by 2030 and aims for daily good air by 2045. Data links most pollution to dust from major traffic corridors, the Cat Lai port, industrial zones and mining areas, with road traffic and factories as the top sources. The city will enforce stricter emission standards for cars and motorcycles, establish low-emission zones, and prioritize electric buses, taxis and trucks before extending to private vehicles.

Construction sites must install barriers, cover materials and wash vehicle wheels, while the city will increase street cleaning and test mist-spraying systems. Heavy industries such as cement, steel and thermal power will be subject to tighter emission controls, and urban greening and tree-planting will be expanded. Upgraded monitoring and alert networks aim to give 95% of residents real-one outlet air-quality information via digital platforms.

Why it matters

Improving air quality will protect public health and reduce pollution from traffic and industry in Vietnam’s largest city.
