Ho Chi Minh City flood barrier project 93% complete, main gate ready for use
The Phu Dinh sluice gate on the Doi Canal, a key part of a $400 million flood defense system for Ho Chi Minh City, is 93% finished and its main tidal-control gate is ready, with crews now installing the ship-lock gate.
Ho Chi Minh City’s $400 million flood protection scheme, intended to safeguard 6.5 million residents, is nearing completion. The Phu Dinh gate on the Doi Canal blocks tidal inflow from the Vam Co Dong and Can Giuoc rivers, and its primary tidal-control gate has been built and is operational. Workers are currently fitting the ship-lock gate, while nearly 1,500 officials, engineers and laborers across six sites use heavy machinery to accelerate the remaining work.
Why it matters
The near-completion of the flood barrier will protect millions of residents from increasingly severe tidal flooding.
