Ho Chi Minh City to build $193 million wave-shaped Thu Thiem 4 bridge
Ho Chi Minh City approved a VND5 trillion (US$193 million) bridge with wave-like arches that will link the city’s south side to the Thu Thiem urban area.
Ho Chi Minh City’s People’s Council has green-lit the Thu Thiem 4 Bridge, a VND5 trillion (US$193 million) project that will connect Nguyen Van Linh Street near the Tan Thuan 2 Bridge with Nguyen Co Thach Street across the Saigon River. The 2.16-km crossing includes a 1.6-km main span with three continuous steel arches shaped like waves, inspired by the region’s waterways. Below the main deck, a dedicated pedestrian and cycling bridge will provide a recreational corridor linking riverside parks on both banks.
Designed by a team comprising Hanoi-based Tecco1, U.S. firm T.Y. Lin and Hanoi’s Cubic Architectural, the bridge will carry eight lanes—six for cars and two for mixed traffic—at 60 kph and allow 15 m of navigational clearance for large vessels. Night-time artistic lighting will highlight the arches, while green spaces and amenities are planned around the approaches. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with the bridge opening in 2028, completing a network of five bridges and a tunnel that will serve the Thu Thiem new urban area.
Why it matters
The bridge will improve traffic flow and provide new pedestrian and cycling routes, boosting connectivity and development in Ho Chi Minh City.
