Hochul urged to fast-track Constitution Pipeline to deliver promised affordability
Critics say Governor Hochul should approve the Constitution natural-gas pipeline now, citing a study that estimates billions in electric-cost savings for the Northeast.
A new study from Daymark Energy Advisors finds that the Constitution Pipeline, a 125-mile natural-gas conduit from Pennsylvania to Schoharie County, could save the Northeast as much as $5.8 billion in electricity costs over the next 20 years, with $3 billion of that benefit accruing to New York. The analysis highlights that increased gas supply would reduce dependence on expensive, high-emission fuel-oil generation during winter demand spikes, delivering both affordability and lower carbon emissions.
The article argues that Governor Hochul, who has centered her reelection bid on “affordability,” should approve the project promptly to claim credit for the projected savings. It notes her previous approval of the Northeast Supply Enhancement pipeline and contrasts this with her current reluctance, which the author attributes to pressure from climate activists. Earlier reports also projected nearly $5 billion in savings, job creation, and new tax revenue from the pipeline. The piece concludes that moving forward with the Constitution Pipeline would align with Hochul’s stated priorities.
Why it matters
The pipeline could significantly lower electricity bills for millions while reducing reliance on high-emission fuel oil.
