Hockey India grants Rs 50 lakh to women’s squad after historic fifth-place finish
Hockey India announced a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh for the women’s national team following their best World Cup result in 52 years, a fifth-place finish in Amstelveen.
At the FIH Women’s World Cup 2026 in Amstelveen, the Indian women’s hockey team achieved a fifth-place finish, the best result in more than five decades. Under the guidance of chief coach Sjoerd Marijne, the side suffered only one loss and drew with top teams such as China, England and Australia, while defeating South Africa 6-1. Captain Salima Tete capped the campaign with a 3-1 victory over world No. 5 Germany to clinch the fifth spot.
Hockey India responded by allocating a total cash reward of Rs 50 lakh, giving each player Rs 2 lakh and each member of the support staff Rs 1 lakh. President Dilip Tirkey described the performance as historic and a testament to the team’s resilience, while secretary general Bhola Nath Singh said the incentive should spur further progress as the team prepares for the Asian Games.
