Hogle Zoo introduces 14-year-old Amur tiger Max from St. Louis

Less than a year after losing its male tiger, Hogle Zoo welcomed Max, a 14-year-old Amur tiger transferred from the Saint Louis Zoo on an AZA breeding recommendation. Asian Highlands supervisor Brittany Dowdell described Max as laid-back, fond of water, cardboard and large tiger-sized toys, and eager to train with keepers, often chuffing and making long calls. He now shares the Asian Highlands area with Sasha, a 7-year-old female who previously lived with Nik, a 15-year-old male who died from urinary complications.

While the tigers occupy adjacent habitats separated by mesh, staff will use controlled settings to help them become familiar before a structured “howdy” introduction. Both animals are vocal, so visitors can expect frequent roars and calls, which may increase as Max settles in. Amur tigers are listed as endangered, facing poaching and habitat loss.
