The legal fight over Paramount’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery has entered a new phase as the California Attorney General, Rob Bonta, faces growing calls to settle the case before a March 2027 trial date set by Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin. Initially, only a handful of high-profile supporters, such as AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron and agent Ari Emanuel, backed the merger, while thousands of A-list talent signed a petition to block it.
In the past two weeks, executives from Regal Cinemas and Lionsgate have announced support, and labor unions including the DGA and IATSE have urged a negotiated agreement, warning that a drawn-out battle could cripple the industry. Governor-candidate Xavier Beccera and other Democrats have also advocated for a settlement, despite Bonta’s public refusal to yield. The Hollywood Teamsters 399 have demanded concrete workforce commitments from Paramount. Discovery will commence on Monday and continue until Jan. 8, according to the filed case-management order.
