Home Affairs Minister says former ASIO officer may testify publicly at Bondi commission
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed that a former ASIO operative, identified as Marcus, is cleared to give open-court evidence to the Bondi royal commission.
Burke said the intelligence agency has advised that Marcus, a ex-ASIO agent, can appear before the Bondi royal commission in a public hearing. The former officer is seeking an Australian visa, arguing his testimony on the Bondi gunmen is too sensitive to be given abroad. While his evidence has been declassified and could be taken by phone, his advocates maintain that an in-person appearance in Australia remains the safest option.
Why it matters
The testimony could influence the outcome of the Bondi commission’s probe into a high-profile gun attack.
