Home Depot beats forecasts as shoppers spend more on modest summer projects

Home Depot reported higher-than-expected second-quarter revenue, driven by increased spending per visit despite a slight dip in transaction count.

Home Depot’s second-quarter revenue increased to $47.86 billion, outpacing the $47.24 billion consensus estimate. Comparable sales at stores open at least a year rose 1.7% worldwide and 1.3% in the United States, indicating healthy retail momentum. Although the number of transactions fell 1%, the average spend per receipt grew to $92.50 from $90.01 a year earlier.

CFO Richard McPhail highlighted that the stronger performance was fueled by customers tackling smaller projects over the summer. Net earnings for the quarter were $4.77 billion, or $4.79 per share, exceeding the $4.73 per-share forecast. The company reaffirmed its outlook for fiscal-2026 sales growth of roughly 2.5%-4.5% with comparable sales expected to be flat to modestly higher.

Why it matters

The results show Home Depot’s resilience amid a sluggish housing market, signaling consumer confidence in DIY spending.
