Home Secretary Mahmood backs plan for evenly distributed asylum seeker housing

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that the government will pursue a mixed-model approach to place asylum seekers across a variety of communities, aiming for a “fair spread”.

Interior minister Shabana Mahmood reiterated the prime minister’s policy to disperse asylum seekers more widely across the United Kingdom, describing it as a mixed-model, taxpayer-funded system. In comments to The Times, she said the aim is to avoid concentrating the effects of migrant arrivals in a single type of community, extending placements to middle-class, wealthy and rural areas. Mahmood, who represents Birmingham where the government has already leased asylum hotels, noted she is familiar with resident concerns.

The policy shift comes after immigration minister Anna Turley warned that recent placements have placed a “huge burden” on localities and sparked civil unrest. A newly issued pamphlet for newcomers outlines basic legal expectations, including prohibitions on sexual offences and harassment. Officials presented the plan as a way to ensure no community bears the brunt of the new dispersal scheme.

Why it matters

The policy could affect housing, services and community relations in towns across the UK.
