Homeless suspect arrested for allegedly starting Sonoma County vineyard fire

Authorities in Santa Rosa apprehended a 32-year-old homeless individual on suspicion of arson after a fire erupted east of Fulton Road off Highway 12 in Sonoma County. A fire department inspector observed the suspect, blackened with soot, discarding a lighter into nearby vegetation, prompting the arrest. Firefighters limited the blaze to an area about 50 by 70 feet, preventing wider spread.

The detention follows five prior arson arrests linked to a surge of over 30 vegetation and suspicious fires reported in the city since June 30, with at least 17 believed intentional.
