Homeowner uncovers Denmark's largest Viking‑era silver hoard while building terrace
A resident in the northern Danish municipality of Rebild was digging a garden terrace when he uncovered a Viking‑age silver hoard weighing about 18.5 kg (41 lb) and containing roughly 700 objects. The collection includes ingots, arm rings, hacksilver, a tiny Thor’s hammer and 47 coins, some whole and some broken, with about 320 items still sealed inside a clay pot. The coins feature Anglo‑Saxon pieces from the reign of Edward the Elder and several Arabic dirhams, indicating long‑distance trade connections. The find has been reported to Nordjyske Museer for further study and preservation.
