Honda 2W eyes production boost beyond 8 million units as demand rises
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India is evaluating options to increase its annual output beyond the planned 8 million units, citing strong domestic sales and growing export markets.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is considering a further capacity increase beyond the 8 million units slated for 2028, as domestic market strength and export opportunities expand. Tsutsumu Otani explained that the firm is weighing the addition of a production line at an existing site against the construction of a new factory, though no decision has been made. The company’s current roadmap adds a fourth line at the Vithalapur plant in Gujarat by 2027 and a third line at the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan by 2028, raising output to around 7 million units in 2027 and 8 million in 2028.
HMSI projects India’s two-wheeler market to hit 22-23 million units this year and aims to sell over 6 million units itself, while export volumes are expected to climb about 30 percent, targeting Latin America and the Middle East. Otani also noted ongoing product strategy adjustments, including potential flex-fuel offerings and a focus on scooters for electrification, while managing higher costs from geopolitical tensions.
Why it matters
The move could reshape India's two-wheeler market and boost Honda's global export footprint.
