Hong Kong deepens economic ties with Middle East and Global South, says Financial Secretary

Financial Secretary Paul Chan said Hong Kong’s cooperation with Middle Eastern and Global South partners is moving beyond investment to concrete project and technology collaboration.

During a visit to Doha for the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s annual meeting, Financial Secretary Paul Chan observed that Hong Kong’s relationship with Middle Eastern and Global South economies is becoming more substantive, focusing on joint innovation and industrial projects rather than just investment. He cited the region’s recent emphasis on infrastructure, artificial intelligence, digitalisation, healthcare, robotics, renewable energy and new materials, all of which match Hong Kong’s strategic direction.

Chan said the discussions reflected a desire for deeper cooperation, including knowledge sharing, institutional development and reliable professional services. He added that Hong Kong will continue to expand its global connections as an international financial centre, with several events planned in the coming months. The finance chief also reported that mainland tourist arrivals during the first three days of the National Day Golden Week reached over 732,000, an 8.4% year-on-year increase, benefitting restaurants and retailers in popular areas.

Why it matters

The shift toward deeper tech and project cooperation could boost Hong Kong’s role as a global financial hub and diversify its economic links.
