Hong Kong leaders and business figures gather for final tribute to former chief executive Tung
Top officials and prominent businesspeople attended a private vigil on Saturday at the Hong Kong Funeral Home to honor former Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, who died on September 8 at age 89.
A private vigil held Saturday at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point brought together senior government officials and leading entrepreneurs to pay their last respects to Tung Chee-hwa, who passed away on September 8 at 89. The hall featured a central portrait of Tung, and attendees included Chief Executive John Lee and former chief executives Donald Tsang, CY Leung and Carrie Lam. Sun Hung Kai Properties’ Thomas Kwok and Raymond Kwok, together with Bank of East Asia executive chairman David Li, were among the business dignitaries present.
In addition to three public condolence books, a temporary register was set up in North Point, where Lam Kwong-siu of Bank of China International signed and recalled Tung’s involvement in the 1997 financial crisis and his ongoing engagement with the banking sector. The ceremony highlighted Tung’s long-standing connections with Hong Kong’s financial community. A public memorial service will take place on Sunday.
