Hong Kong police probe possible child abuse after viral video of girl hauling beer

Hong Kong police have opened an investigation into whether a 10-year-old girl seen carrying beer bags in a viral video may be a victim of abuse.

A video of a 10-year-old girl hauling two plastic bags filled with beer cans near Fu Tai Estate in Tuen Mun went viral on Facebook and other platforms. Passersby reported that the girl refused help, saying her father would not allow it, and a man accompanying her was heard calling her a "useless person." Hong Kong police first concluded there were no clear signs of abuse, but later re-opened the case under the New Territories North Child Abuse Investigation Unit.

The school the girl attends, Lutheran Tsang Shing Siu Leun School, deployed social workers and teachers to provide support and launched its own inquiry. Authorities have asked the public not to share the footage to avoid further trauma for the child and her family.

Why it matters

The case highlights concerns about child welfare and the need for careful handling of viral content involving minors.
