Hong Kong's August trade jumps sharply, exports surge to most major markets
Hong Kong's August export value rose 53% year-on-year to HK$667.9 billion, while imports climbed 60% to HK$739.1 billion, driven by strong demand for AI-related electronics.
According to figures released by the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong recorded a 53% year-on-year increase in export value in August, totaling HK$667.9 billion, following a 50.7% rise in July. Import values surged 60% to HK$739.1 billion, compared with a 41% increase the month before. Over the first eight months, total exports were up 42.5% and imports 43.2% versus the same period in 2025, resulting in a trade deficit of HK$371.2 billion, or 7.2% of imports.
A government spokesman said the surge reflects strong overseas demand for AI-related electronic goods, and expects this trend to support trade in the near term. However, he cautioned that ongoing Middle East tensions and protectionist measures among advanced economies keep the external environment uncertain.
Why it matters
The surge highlights Hong Kong's growing role in the global AI hardware supply chain amid broader trade uncertainties.
