Hong Kong security police detain insurance agent and associate over alleged seditious online posts
Hong Kong national security police arrested a 38-year-old licensed insurance agent and a woman in Kowloon for allegedly operating social-media pages that incite hatred against the city’s constitutional order and using them to sell insurance.
Hong Kong’s national security police announced the detention of two 38-year-olds—a licensed insurance agent and a female associate—in Kowloon on charges of violating the city’s Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, known locally as Article 23. Authorities allege the pair managed multiple social-media pages that disseminated material intended to stir hostility toward Hong Kong’s constitutional framework, and that the man exploited the platforms to market insurance policies.
The male suspect, identified as Wong Ka-ho, previously participated in localist groups such as North of the Rings and North District Blueprint and unsuccessfully ran for district-council seats in 2015 and 2019. Police obtained a court warrant to search their residences and, after questioning, released both individuals on bail pending further investigation. Under Article 23, sedition carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.
