Hong Kong to Hold Vigil and Public Memorial for Former Chief Executive Tung

Hong Kong will host a Saturday vigil and a Sunday public memorial for former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa, who died at 89.

The funeral committee scheduled a vigil from 3 pm to 10 pm Saturday at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point, followed by a memorial service at 9 am Sunday. The committee is chaired by CCP Politburo member Shi Taifeng, with deputies CY Leung, Wang Dongfeng, Xia Baolong and current chief executive John Lee. Tung Chee-hwa passed away on September 8 at age 89.

Why it matters

The ceremonies mark the first official mourning of Hong Kong’s inaugural chief executive, highlighting the city’s political connection to mainland China.
