Hong Kong to introduce new fire safety laws after court fire tragedy
Security Minister Chris Tang announced upcoming legislative reforms to strengthen fire safety following the Wang Fuk Court blaze.
In response to the deadly Wang Fuk Court fire, Hong Kong officials are preparing a package of fire-safety legislative reforms. Security Minister Chris Tang told a radio programme that the administration has already implemented several administrative steps over the past year and that additional legal changes are forthcoming. An independent committee delivered its report to the Chief Executive on Thursday, and John Lee promised that a full set of reforms will be announced shortly.
Tang emphasized that the Fire Services Department bears final accountability for fire safety and will follow up on any related complaints, even if another department assumes responsibility. The chief executive has also warned that anyone found responsible for the blaze will be held to account.
Why it matters
